Brooklyn nightlife, contrary to popular belief, is every bit as exciting as Manhattan nightlife, though perhaps less touristy and expensive. Because of Manhattan's ongoing gentrification, many artists, entrepreneurs, and small business owners have been forced across the East River to avoid outrageous rent increases. Today, Brooklyn is widely regarded as New York City's next up-and-coming borough, with a wide and eclectic variety of bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Its popularity is such that its westernmost neighborhoods are already becoming increasingly gentrified.
